Quang Tri Citadel

Quang Tri, Vietnam

The architectural and landscape qualification of the Quang Tri Citadel bears the memory of the history of the recent Vietnam War (summer 1972), the ravages of the “battle of 81 days and nights”. The citadel built during the reign of Vua Gia Long in 1809 is in the center of the city; it can become the major topic of an urban requalification project of public spaces in the city center as well as a tourist project supplementing the cemeteries and Vietnam War memorials all around town.

The presence of wandering souls in the ramparts and the terrible history of the fierce battles, today prevent the construction of buildings inside the ramparts. The only landscaping action is therefore to preserve the perfect geometry of the citadel for future generations and to reinforce the existing ramparts and moats by adopting a coherent planting plan that does not damage them. Outside the ramparts, a clear reading of the moats with an optical device of perspectives added to public spaces in belvedere will reinforce the visual presence of the citadel in the city. It is a project that speaks of memory, it qualifies a "void" in the heart of the city by qualifying the public spaces of the city on the edge of the moat. It is a patrimonial project.
